Solar and battery rebates by state

A plain-English summary of federal and state incentives for home solar and batteries, based on official government sources checked on 12 October 2026. Your quote shows the exact amounts that apply to you.

Australia-wide

Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program

The Australian Government says this program provides a discount of around 30% on the upfront cost of installing an eligible battery. It supports households and small businesses, and is usually applied as an upfront reduction on your quote through small-scale technology certificates (STCs).

  • The battery must be 5–100 kWh, on the Clean Energy Council approved battery list, and capable of joining a virtual power plant (VPP) if it's grid-connected.
  • It must be installed with new or existing solar by a Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA)-accredited installer with battery endorsement.
  • One eligible battery per premises. Larger batteries get less support per kWh, and the discount steps down every six months until 2030.
  • The dollar value depends on the battery's usable capacity, the install date and the market price of STCs.

States and territories

State and territory incentives

These may apply on top of, or instead of, the federal discount. Check eligibility using the official link for your state.

Western Australia

Open

WA Residential Battery Scheme

A rebate of up to $1,300 for Synergy customers or up to $3,800 for Horizon Power customers, based on up to 10 kWh of usable capacity (minimum 5 kWh). You must join a VPP with Synergy or Horizon Power, and the battery must be installed by a vendor accredited for the scheme. No-interest loans of up to $10,000 are available to eligible households. It can be combined with the federal program. Total Solar is a participating vendor in the WA Residential Battery Scheme, so for eligible customers the rebate can be applied to your quote.

New South Wales

VPP incentive

NSW battery and VPP incentives

The NSW battery installation discount is no longer offered for homes because the federal program is available. The NSW Government offers an incentive for connecting an eligible battery to a virtual power plant, which can be combined with the federal discount.

Victoria

Solar rebate

Solar Homes program

Eligible households can get a solar panel rebate of up to $1,400, with an optional matching interest-free loan. Income, property value and other criteria apply (household income cap of $150,000 from 1 July 2026). Solar Victoria's battery loans are closed, so batteries are supported through the federal program.

Sustainable Household Scheme

Eligible households can borrow $2,000 to $20,000 at 3% interest over up to 10 years for products including home batteries and EV chargers. Rooftop solar is only included for eligible concession card holders, through the Home Energy Support Program.

Rebate questions

Will the discount be on my quote?

Yes. Where you're eligible, the federal STC discount and any state rebate we can apply are shown as separate lines on your itemised quote, so you can see the full price and each discount.

What is a virtual power plant (VPP), and do I have to join one?

A VPP links many batteries so they can support the grid at busy times, usually through your energy retailer. The federal program requires the battery to be capable of joining a VPP. Some state incentives, including WA's battery rebate and the NSW VPP incentive, require you to actually join. Joining can affect how your battery is used and your electricity plan, so compare offers and read the terms.

Can I combine federal and state incentives?

Some can be combined, for example the WA Residential Battery Scheme and the NSW VPP incentive with the federal program. Each scheme has its own rules, so check the official link for your state, and we'll confirm what applies on your quote.

How often does this information change?

Often. The federal STC factor steps down every six months and state schemes open, change or close. We check official sources regularly, and this page shows the date it was last checked.

Important information

Savings and performance: Any savings or output depend on your electricity usage, tariffs, feed-in rates, roof orientation, shading, weather, system size and, where relevant, VPP participation. We don't guarantee savings. Your written quote includes a site-specific estimate and its assumptions.

Government incentives: Incentives are set by governments, subject to eligibility, and can change or close without notice. Figures are maximums ("up to") and were checked against official sources on 12 October 2026. Total Solar is not a government body and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by any government program.

Prices: Every quote is itemised, includes GST and shows eligible discounts separately. Extra costs (for example switchboard upgrades or metering) are listed on your quote.
