Adding a battery to existing solar
Many homes with solar can add a battery. We check your current inverter, panels and switchboard first, then recommend one of two approaches.
AC-coupled battery
The battery has its own inverter and connects on the AC side, alongside your existing solar inverter. This can suit homes whose current inverter is working well and still under warranty.
DC-coupled (hybrid) battery
A hybrid inverter runs both the panels and the battery, so solar charges the battery directly. Adding one usually means replacing your current inverter with a compatible hybrid model.
When an inverter swap is needed
Usually when your inverter isn't compatible with the battery, is near the end of its life or warranty, or when a hybrid is the better fit for the network's inverter and export limits. If a swap is needed, we explain why and list it separately on your quote.
Backup and blackout capability
What backup means
With backup, the battery keeps selected circuits running when the grid goes down. The system disconnects from the grid and runs from the battery, and from solar where the system supports it.
Essential circuits
Backup usually covers essential circuits that a licensed electrician connects to the battery's backup output, such as lights, the fridge and some power points. High-load appliances such as ducted air conditioning and ovens are usually left off.
Not every system backs up
Many battery systems switch off with the grid unless they are designed and wired for backup. If backup matters to you, tell us, and your quote will state exactly what is and isn't backed up.
Battery rebates in WA
Federal: Cheaper Home Batteries Program
Since 1 July 2025, eligible batteries create small-scale technology certificates (STCs). The battery must be on the Clean Energy Council approved list and be VPP-capable if grid-connected. The support depends on usable capacity and reduces over time.
WA Residential Battery Scheme
Eligible Synergy and Horizon Power customers may get a WA Government rebate when they install an eligible battery through a participating vendor. Total Solar is a WA Residential Battery Scheme vendor. Conditions apply, including joining a VPP in some cases.
How it shows on your quote
Your quote shows the price before incentives, each incentive, and the amount you pay. Incentive values can change between quote and installation.

Solar battery FAQs
Which battery brands do you install?
We install home batteries from FoxESS, Alpha ESS, Growatt, GoodWe, Sigenergy (SigenStor) and SAJ. The models we use are selected from the Clean Energy Council approved lists, and your written quote names the exact brand and model.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar?
Often, yes. We check your existing inverter, panels and switchboard first. Depending on what you have, we either add an AC-coupled battery alongside your current inverter, or replace the inverter with a hybrid inverter that connects the battery on the DC side. Any inverter or switchboard upgrade is listed separately on your quote.
What is the difference between AC-coupled and DC-coupled batteries?
A DC-coupled battery connects to a hybrid inverter that also runs your solar panels, so solar can charge the battery directly. An AC-coupled battery has its own inverter and connects on the AC side, so it can work alongside an existing solar inverter. Which suits you depends on your current inverter, its age and warranty, and the network's export and inverter limits.
When do I need to replace my inverter to add a battery?
Usually when your current inverter isn't compatible with the battery you want, is near the end of its life or warranty, or when a hybrid inverter is the better fit for your goals and the network's rules. If a swap is needed, we explain why and list it on your quote.
Will a battery keep my power on in a blackout?
Not every battery system provides backup. Many systems switch off with the grid unless they are designed and wired for backup. Where backup is included, it usually covers selected essential circuits, such as lights, the fridge and some power points, rather than the whole home. We explain exactly what would be backed up on your quote.
What are essential circuits?
Essential circuits are the circuits a licensed electrician connects to the battery's backup output, such as lighting, the fridge and selected power points. High-load appliances like ducted air conditioning, ovens and pool pumps are usually left off backup, because a battery has a limit on how much power it can supply at once.
Are there rebates for batteries in WA?
Eligible batteries can receive support under the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, and eligible Synergy and Horizon Power customers may also get the WA Residential Battery Scheme rebate. Total Solar is a WA Residential Battery Scheme vendor. Conditions apply, including connecting to a virtual power plant (VPP) in some cases. See our WA rebates guide.
What size battery do I need?
It depends on how much power you use in the evening and overnight, whether you want backup, and your budget. Usable capacity (kWh) is how much energy you can draw on, and power (kW) is how much the battery can supply at once. We size the battery from your bills and usage.
What warranty comes with a battery?
The manufacturer provides the product and performance warranty, and terms vary by brand and model. We provide a written workmanship warranty on our installation, and your quote lists the warranty for your exact model. You also have automatic consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law.
Is it safe to work on my battery or switchboard myself?
No. Never open your switchboard or take apart your inverter or battery. They can hold dangerous voltages even when switched off. If something looks wrong, follow the shutdown steps on the label or in the owner's manual and call a licensed electrician.
