What an inverter does
Panels produce DC electricity. The inverter turns it into AC for your home and the grid, manages how the system works with the network, and usually provides the monitoring app. It is the most important part to get right after the installation itself.
Types of inverter
- String inverter: one inverter for groups of panels. Simple and widely used. Shade on one panel can reduce output of the string.
- Hybrid inverter: a string inverter that can also run a battery, now or later. A common choice if you may add a battery.
- Microinverters: a small inverter on each panel. Each panel works independently, which helps on shaded or complex roofs.
- Optimisers: fitted to panels to work with a string inverter, with similar benefits on shaded roofs.
- Battery inverter (AC-coupled): adds a battery to an existing solar system without replacing its inverter.
Size and phase
The inverter's rating (kW) limits how much power the system can deliver at once. In WA, the network operator sets limits on inverter size and exports, which depend on your address and whether the home is single or three phase. A three-phase home may need a three-phase inverter for larger systems.
What to check
- It is on the Clean Energy Council approved inverter list.
- The manufacturer has an Australian office or support line, and a clear warranty process.
- Warranty length, and whether it can be extended.
- Battery compatibility, if you want a battery now or later.
- Backup capability, if you want power during outages.
- The monitoring app, and how it connects (Wi-Fi, LAN or 4G).
- Where it will be mounted: shaded, ventilated spots help inverters run cooler.
Brands we install
We install inverters and batteries from FoxESS, Alpha ESS, Growatt, GoodWe, Sigenergy and SAJ. Each has an Australian presence. You can read about each brand on our solar inverter page. Your quote names the exact model chosen for your home.
Living with your inverter
Learn what the status lights mean, keep the app connected (see Wi-Fi setup), look up any fault codes, and follow the safe shutdown steps. Never open the inverter, battery or switchboard. Call a licensed electrician.
